Similar to the introduction of the Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS®), the Polytrauma Course addresses the critical trauma room phase for patients with severe injuries, aiming to enhance their treatment outcomes. While the ATLS® focuses on this aspect, the shock room phase remains complex and subject to ongoing debate. Originating from collaboration between Prof. Pape (formerly of University Aachen and Hannover) and the University of Leeds (Prof. Giannoudis), with later involvement from the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (Prof. Peitzman), the course serves as a platform for interdisciplinary knowledge exchange among visceral surgeons, neurosurgeons, orthopedic surgeons, and intensivists to elevate treatment standards. Instituted with a quality management system, externally assessed by May 2014, and meeting ISO 9001:2008/2015 standards, the Polytrauma Course has conducted over 30 international sessions since 2002. Endorsed by various surgical societies and international conferences, it remains a hallmark in trauma care education and practice improvement worldwide.
